Daily Routines
We all have our morning routines, and some may not even realize it. Humans are programmed to naturally form routines and habits every day. We can either make our own, or pick up some aspects from other people's routine, especially if you live in the same quarters as them. I live with three other girls, and along the way I have gotten to know what their morning routines are and what they need to do every morning before they begin their day.
First we have my roommate Kohana. She has an alarm for 7:30 AM, then another at 7:45, then another at 8:00, and so on and so forth. I never really understood that. I'm a firm believer of having only one alarm with no snooze button. Anyway, after her fifteen alarms, Kohana gets out of bed and makes her morning tea. After she finishes her tea, she takes her yoga mat outside and does yoga for about fifteen minutes. There have been those days that Kohana isn't able to make her tea because she ran out, or doesn't have time to do her yoga. On those days, there is definitely a little shift in her mood. We don't always notice it, but if we fall out of our usual routines, we feel off for the rest of the day.
Then there is my roommate Mona. I wouldn't necessarily say she has a morning routine, however, she does have her nightly routine. She makes herself a cup of tea, non-caffeinated, around 8:00 PM. Every night before we go to bed, Mona and I sit in the living room and watch one of our favorite shows, Vampire Diaries. We will not go to bed before watching at least one episode. There's also a little bickering that goes on between us (that's what happens when you stick two strong-headed, Jewish women in the same house). But it's all out of love, sometimes.
We then have my third roommate Genna. She's the early bird of the house (definitely not me). She runs her (very loud) coffee machine at around 6:00 AM, which usually wakes Mona and I up; we're really light sleepers. If she doesn't have her coffee, she usually ends up with a headache at some point of the day. As she drinks her coffee, she takes about thirty minutes doing her hair and makeup. Once she's done with that, Genna is ready to take on her day.
Lastly we have the fourth and final roommate, me. I tend to stick to the same breakfast every morning. I have my bagel with cream cheese with some slices of tomatoes on top, and then a cup of coffee on the side. While I eat, I watch an episode of my go-to show, Friends. It's honestly second hand nature by now. I didn't even realize I did the same thing every morning until my roommates pointed it out to me. Doing this daily routine gives me a sense of serenity and calmness, because I feel comforted doing the things I did while living with my parents before I moved for college.
Everyone has some sort of routine in their day, whether it is in the morning or at night. If you feel like you don't have one, click here to find some ideas of what you can do. If you do have one, I'm curious to know your daily routines and why you feel the need to do them.
Hi Yarden! You’re right - I definitely have a morning routine set down and sometimes I don’t even realize it. I live with my family, so it’s interesting to see how my routines differ from theirs. I think it’s interesting how you were able to observe your roommates’ different routines and sort of make something like an infographic to them! For me, my routine differs depending on if I have to drop my brother off to school and what time my first class starts. Regardless, I still follow a basic routine! First, I have an alarm set around 30 minutes before I actually want to wake up. It’s crucial. Then, I brush my teeth and wash my face first thing. I feel like doing these two things actually wakes me up. For breakfast, I typically eat the same things every week. It’s either a breakfast burrito, eggs and some type of breakfast meat, blueberry waffles, or just bread. I also used to meditate every morning, but since I’ve been so busy lately, I’ve fallen out of that habit. I think routines are so interesting and I find it funny how we all have different ways to start our mornings.
ReplyDeleteHi Yarden! Thank you for the great post. I had fun reading it. I agree with you, routines are important. They help us create positive daily habits and help us become more successful. I wake up around 6:15 or 6:30. I get up, brush my teeth, splash my face with freezing cold water and dress up and go to the gym. I workout for about an hour and come home. My daughter wakes up around 8:30 so I go ahead feed her and play with her for a little while. After she goes to sleep I go ahead and do yoga and meditate for about 10-15 minutes. Then, I take a shower and make myself breakfast and my favorite green tea and enjoy the rest of my morning. This is my morning routine and I do these things to feel put together for myself and feel organized. Otherwise, I feel that I will have a scattered day if I don't try to complete my morning routine.
ReplyDeleteHello Yarden,
ReplyDeleteI am also a firm believer of having only one alarm with no snooze button. I usually jolt awake right as I hear my alarm going off. Sometimes I even wake up before it rings. I really enjoyed learning about your, and your roommates daily routines. As for me, my niece gets brought to my place at 5 am and we go back to sleep. I wake up at 7 and get her ready for school and take her to school. After coming back I have breakfast, get ready, and either go to school on the days I have class or babysit when I do not. When I get home and have time I usually do my homework or watch shows on Netflix. I look forward to reading your next blog post!
